Since this question doesn’t specify if you are asking about World War I or World War II, I will focus on both wars.
In World War I, the United Stated was very supportive of the Allies before we joined the war. We had more in common with Great Britain than we did with Germany. Our language was similar and our form of government had some similarities. One of President Wilson’s stated war goals was to make the world safe for democratic governments. Both France and Great Britain had democratic governments, unlike Germany and Austria-Hungary. We also were doing more trading with the Allies than we were doing with the Central Powers. When Germany began to attack our ships, many Americans were outraged.
In World War II, we needed to help the Allies, especially Great Britain, before we entered the war. For a period of time, Great Britain was the only major country left in Europe to stop the aggression of Germany and Italy. If Great Britain fell to the Axis Powers, we could have been the only major power left to fight the aggression and expansion of Germany, Japan, and Italy. After Japan attacked us at Pearl Harbor, we had to go to war against Japan, Germany, and Italy.
