For example, schools were segregated, modes of transportation were segregated, and drinking fountains and bathrooms were segregated. These laws perpetuated the belief of white superiority. The facilities that were set aside for African-Americans were usually inferior to the same facilities for whites. Many white southerners believed the African-Americans were inferior and deserved to have inferior facilities than the whites had. These laws also fueled white supremacy groups like the Ku Klux Klan. They believed they were protecting the white race. These groups believed their actions toward African-Americans were justified.
The Jim Crow laws perpetuated the negative feelings and negative attitudes that many southerners had about African-Americans.
