What are some examples of kindness in The Silver Sword?

The old man and his wife harbored Joseph in their house despite knowing that Joseph had escaped from prison. The old man and his wife risked being arrested by harboring and aiding an escapee.

Jan was kind to Joseph when he gave him some food he had stolen from the Nazis for his journey out of Warsaw.

Ruth rescued Jan and tended to him when he was ill. Jan was discovered by children who were playing around where Ruth had established her school.

Ivan, the Russian soldier, was kind enough to bring the children some food and supplies. In addition, Ivan gave the children shoes for their journey out of Warsaw and made Jan a new wooden box.

The children made their way through Bavaria and spent the night in a barn. The farmer found them in the morning and threatened to hand them over to the burgomaster. However, the farmer’s wife welcomed the children to stay. The children stayed with the farmer, and he later helped the children escape the burgomaster. The farmer gave the children his old canoes for their voyage down a nearby river.

Joe, the American soldier of Polish descent, offered to help Ruth and the other children. The soldier gave them a ride all the way to the Swiss border.
