Is blue periwinkle an aid to memory?

The periwinkle plant, also known as myrtle or Vinca minor in Latin, has been used throughout history as an herbal remedy for a number of conditions. It has been used in treating diabetes, cough, and excessive menstrual bleeding, as well as memory loss. The periwinkle plant contains vincamine, a compound which can be isolated for medicinal use.

The use of vincamine-based medications for memory loss is quite popular in Europe, and a number of brand-name and generic drugs exist for the purpose of treating degenerative brain conditions like dementia. As an alternative to pharmaceuticals, someone may use a tincture, tea, or capsule made with the periwinkle plant. In addition to boosting memory, periwinkle can help improve concentration and act as a diuretic and hemostatic agent.

If you or someone you know is suffering from memory loss or poor concentration, please speak with your physician for medical advice.
