During Reconstruction, many things happened in our country, especially in the South. Some of these developments still exist today. One effect of Reconstruction was the diversification of the South’s economy. Before the Civil War began, the South was almost an exclusively agriculturally based society. There were very few industries as most southerners were farmers. There were large plantations as well as smaller farms. Cotton was one main product that was grown. Rice was another crop that was grown.
After the Civil war ended, the South was in ruins. The South needed to be rebuilt. One impact of the rebuilding of the South was the development of new industries. Another impact was the expansion of the railroads into the South. The South became less dependent on farming after the Civil War. Their economy became more diversified. The growth of industries continued after Reconstruction ended. Today, the South has many industries. With the expansion of the railroads and with the growth of industries, the South’s economy was transformed during Reconstruction and after it ended.
