What is a brief character sketch of the narrator of Written on the Body?

The narrator in this book is very complex and even ambiguous. This intriguing characterization is usually considered to be one of the high points of the novel. The ambiguity regarding the narrator is such that they are never named and even their gender is unknown.

The narrator's defining personality trait is their sarcasm and cynicism, which serves as a front for their true nature. The true nature of the narrator, rather surprisingly, is revealed to be romantic.

The narrator admits to being addicted to passion, and it is evident that the narrator's many passions have led to a great deal of pain. It follows, then, that the front of cynicism is a shield meant to protect the narrator from further pain caused by their passions.
