This question is an odd one, because the entire plot of the book takes place after Brent and his parents move to Chicago. You would be attempting to summarize all of the events of Whirligig in just one paragraph. It may be more likely that you are being asked to supply the back story as it stood before Brent goes to the party and then causes the accident. Here’s some information on what happens during that part of the story.
Brent and his parents recently moved to Chicago because Mr. Bishop’s rental car job forced the relocation. This is at least the second time they’ve moved because of it. They had previously lived in Connecticut, and then, in Atlanta. The family of three doesn’t seem to ever have too much to talk about over dinner, though. Brent isn’t particularly close to either parent, and he doesn’t confide in them. Moving has increased Mr. Bishop's salary, but it has not brought the family members closer. Brent likes the Chicago area because he’s going to the Montfort School, which is a private and upscale school. Over the years, he’s gotten used to being the new kid. He does his best to try to figure out how to fit in with the crowd, as well as to figure out which crowd is the one to hang out with. At the moment, he likes a girl named Brianna, but he hasn’t had a chance to approach her. When Jonathan says he can go along to a party at Chaz’s place, Brent is more than ready to leave the house and to go. He probably thinks he can make some inroads to friendship here, and he can enjoy himself at the same time. At home with his parents, he would either be bored or would be in his bedroom playing video games. Soon all of their lives would change dramatically.
