Martin Luther King, Jr. had a dream that all people would be treated equally. His dream was that skin color wouldn’t be a factor in how people were treated. Martin Luther King, Jr. wanted African-Americans to achieve this dream through nonviolent protests.
Martin Luther King, Jr. believed the best way to draw attention to the injustices in the South was to highlight the unequal treatment African-Americans faced by protesting nonviolently. In the past, Martin Luther King, Jr. supported economic boycotts, such as the bus boycott in Montgomery. He believed in marching to protest unfair actions. He believed African-Americans should use the court system to address the injustices they faced by filing lawsuits. He also believed pressure should be put on elected officials at the national level to pass laws to end discrimination. He was concerned that there was a growing frustration with the slow pace of change. He wanted African-Americans to resist the urge to either accept the situation by doing nothing or by protesting with violent actions. Martin Luther King, Jr. believed nonviolent actions were the best way to achieve the ideals he had in his dream of an equal society.
