Why did Plato hate democracy?

Plato believed that the only thing worse than democracy was tyranny.  However, he also asserted that if democracy prevailed then it would pave the way for tyranny.

In Plato's view, democracy was flawed because of tensions among the social classes. He felt that there was not true unity between the classes, and one group was bound to be more powerful than another. He strongly believed that politicians who represented the citizenry should be qualified for their position, as any other professional would be.

Plato further contended that democracy could lead to anarchy and disunity. He felt there was not a possibility for unity because of the different characteristics of all individuals and various belief systems.
