Why did over 600,000 people die during the Civil War?

The Civil War was a long, costly war. Over 600,000 people died in the war. There are reasons why this number was so high.

The Civil War lasted four years. There were many battles fought during this time. The soldiers were often inexperienced, and some of the battle actions were very risky. At Gettysburg, the southern soldiers ran across an open field up Cemetery Ridge. Many were killed as the Union soldiers shot them. Each side had a fanatical belief that they were fighting for the right things. This led to questionable actions that often resulted in death when they failed.

Lack of supplies and harsh weather conditions also contributed to the high casualty rate. Soldiers, especially those in the South, didn’t have enough supplies. They also were constantly hungry. The harsh winters also contributed to the death of some of the soldiers.

A long war in which both sides believed they were right led to conditions that caused a high casualty rate during the Civil War.
