There are many different reasons why the presence of caregivers can affect the longevity of the elderly. The reasons do vary, however, with the individual receiving care.
One significant issue affecting mortality is dementia. A person with dementia, even in a mild form, may struggle to remember to eat, take medications, or otherwise perform essential types of self-care. All of these can affect longevity.
Next, as people become older and frailer, it may become harder for them to shop and cook, increasing the potential for malnutrition. Also, the logistics of getting to dentists, doctors, and physical therapy might become obstacles of maintaining good health for older people who cannot drive and lack access to public transit.
Another important issue for many of the elderly is that social isolation can lead to depression or other mental health issues. The presence and companionship of a caregiver can help with that, thereby increasing longevity.
