On the periodic table, what is the symbol for chlorine?

The elemental symbol for chlorine on the periodic table is Cl.

An element is a type of atom that has a specific number of protons. Each known element has a box on the periodic table.  In the center of the elemental boxes are the symbols of the elements. Elemental symbols are composed of one or two letters. The first letter of an element’s symbol is always capitalized. If there is a second letter in an element’s symbol, then it is a lowercase letter.  Most of the time, the symbols represent the first one or two letter of an element’s name. If this is not the case, then it is because the element’s symbol represents the element’s name in another language. For example, the symbols for lead is Pb. This is because the Latin name for lead is plumbum.
