What are some examples of precipitation reactions in day to day life?

Precipitation occurs when two different substances are mixed and they generate a substance which is insoluble in the solvent and hence settles out. The substance that settles down is known as the precipitate.

If there are suspended particles in your water, try adding some alum (aluminum sulfate) and mix it. After few minutes, you will see particles settling down. This is a precipitation reaction used to remove solids from our drinking water supplies. When we make eggs, a thin layer is formed around the egg yolk (the yellow portion of the egg); this represents precipitation of proteins. If we leave milk out in the open for couple of days, it becomes sour and goes bad due to precipitation of milk proteins. This curdling process is used to make cheese and tofu. We can achieve the same curdling results by adding some lemon juice to the milk.

Hope this helps.
