The Wednesday Wars follows the life of Holling Hoodhood through one entire school year. Holling attends a school that is 50% Jewish and 50% Catholic. I know, weird. To add to the oddity of Holling's situation is the fact that he is neither religion. So on Wednesday afternoons, when the Jewish and the Catholic students go to their respective religious studies, Holling has to go to Mrs. Baker's classroom.
At first, Mrs. Baker has Holling do boring and menial clean up tasks. Holling doesn't like her, and she doesn't like him. Eventually Mrs. Baker decides to use their time together to teach Holling about Shakespeare and his plays. Holling learns to love Shakespeare. Holling and Mrs. Baker grow closer throughout the novel. She helps Holling with his turbulent home life and social life. He helps her cope with the fact that her husband is MIA in Vietnam. That's about it. Lots of little events happen through the book, but it is a very character driven novel. For a more in depth summary, see the link below.
