Cyclone Yasi hit Australia in February of 2011. The federal response to the natural disaster can be considered a success in that not one person lost their life as a result of the storm. The federal government organized an evacuation before the storm hit and the aftermath was handled by the military. The federal use of the military in response to the storm was called Operation Yasi Assist. All branches of the military worked together in a number of different ways after the storm.
The efforts of the military included many of the things you would expect after a major storm. They were responsible for supplying ration packs to over 3,000 people and dropping tons of food in affected areas. Debris was moved from roads and personal property. A door-to-door check of homes in damaged areas was conducted to make sure residents were safe. The response of the Australian federal government in the wake of the cyclone most likely saved lives and enabled Australia to recover quicker.
