Where did the sacrifice of Iphigenia take place ?

The sacrifice of Iphigenia took place at Aulis (modern-day Avlida) in ancient Greece. The Greek fleet had gathered at Aulis before they departed for Troy at the start of the Trojan War. Unfortunately, Agamemnon had incurred the wrath of the goddess Artemis by killing a sacred deer. As punishment, Artemis calmed the winds, thus preventing the Greeks from sailing.

The only way to appease her wrath was to sacrifice his daughter, Iphigenia. Following the sacrifice, the winds were loosed and the Greeks were able to begin their quest to reclaim Helen, the sister-in-law of Agamemnon. Unfortunately for Agamemnon, this murder came back to haunt him. His wife, Clytaemnestra, never forgave him for killing Iphigenia. She murdered him upon his return from Troy.
