When tyranny becomes law, rebellion is a right.
--Simon Bolivar
Simon Bolivar is known as a liberator for most of South America. The man received the name El Libertador, the liberator, for good reason. He has countless plazas and cities named after him around the world. Simon Bolivar earned those names with fierce determination, diplomatic acumen, and actions as a reluctant soldier. He is responsible for the freedom of much of South America from Spanish rule. In 1825, the Republic of Bolivia was established and named in his honor. Bolivar would fight and achieve independence for six countries. In 1821, Gran Colombia was created and it would eventually account for four independent Latin American nations: Venezuela, Ecuador, Panama, and Colombia. In 1824, his work allowed for the independence of Peru. Bolivar toured most of Europe and the Caribbean to rally international support and to gain insight into how his new states should be governed. His tireless work for independence against Spanish rule makes him one of the most important people in the history of South America.
