Why is the Battle of Lexington important?

The Battle of Lexington (as well as the Battle of Concord) was an important event in the activities surrounding the Revolutionary War. The colonists expected the British army to move out of Boston into the countryside. They knew the British were interested in capturing John Hancock and Samuel Adams. They also knew the British wanted to subdue the colonial resistance in the area surrounding Boston.

The Battle of Lexington was important because it was the unofficial beginning of the Revolutionary War. This was the first time the colonial army fought the British army. After the fighting occurred at Lexington, the British moved on to fight at Concord. There were casualties on both sides as a result of the Battles at Lexington and at Concord. For some colonists, there was no turning back after these battles were fought. They knew it was only a matter of time before independence would be declared and the Revolutionary War would begin.
