Dramatic works of comedy can be characterized in many different ways, and every comedy will consist of its own distinctive blend of traits that make it unique. There are, however, some characteristics that most dramatic comedies possess.
Three Common Characteristics of Dramatic Comedies
Tolerance for Chaos and Uncertainty
The setting of a comedy often allows for things to become messy. Relationships, situations, characters, and dialogue are often neither neat nor straightforward. Randomness, nonsense, surprise, and absurdity are all normal (and even expected) elements of a comedy.
Playfulness and Willingness to Think Differently
Comedies often challenge the audience's notions of what is normal. Comedies may present serious topics playfully, or playful topics seriously. Comedies are willing to approach ideas from a different tack, thus unseating the audience's expectations.
Intention for Amusement and Entertainment
Perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when considering comedy is laughter. The insertion of humor and lightness for the purpose of amusement is central to any comedic drama.
Every comedy is unique, and this list of characteristics is far from comprehensive. It is, however, a good foundation for examining and defining comedic works.
