Each source shows the role of government in our lives. The first source, which contains two pictures of a girl working, shows the importance of having government rules and regulations regarding child labor. The United States didn’t have child labor laws until the early 1900s. Kids were working in factories. They often worked long hours, for low pay, and worked in dangerous environments. This ended with the passage of child labor laws. Unfortunately, a similar situation currently exists in Bangladesh, where child labor laws are very hard to enforce. Without government regulations, kids could be working in factories.
The second source, a picture of a food bank squeezed between rising food and rising gasoline prices, shows how food banks are suffering because more people are in need of the services provided by food banks as prices of basic commodities such as food and gas are rising. These rising prices may mean less food is being donated. People may have less money to spend for donating food. The cost of transporting this food may also impact food donations and food distributions. As food banks struggle, the government would need to step in to help those people who are in need of food.
The third source shows how the government provides payments to seniors with lower income levels. Based on a graduated scale, the government provides money to help these seniors live. The government is acting as a safety net for seniors who have very little income. Without government assistance, these people would be in significant distress.
Each of these sources shows the role of government in our lives.
