At first, Helen did not understand the Bible when it was read to her. She asked her cousin to read a passage from the Bible to her one day. Helen found the text about Joseph in the book of Genesis to be very dull. In fact, Helen thought "the unusual language and repetition made the story seem unreal and far away in the land of Canaan" (The Story of My Life, Chapter XXI). She actually fell asleep during her cousin's reading because she found the text so uninteresting.
Later, Helen came to appreciate the Bible. She treasured the Bible and it brought her joy. Even after Helen came to value the Bible, however, there were still parts of it she did not like.
Helen especially identified with female figures in the Bible. She was deeply impressed by the stories of Ruth and Esther. Their strength and positive attributes were qualities that Helen admired. The Bible also brought comfort to Helen.
