What strange request does Tom Fleet make to Sal in the the hospital?

Tom Fleet is the boy who had threatened Sal and her grandparents as they were swimming in a river. He had a knife, but Gramps had Sal show off her skills throwing rocks. Gram was bitten by a water moccasin, a poisonous snake. Gramps rushed her to the hospital, with Tom along to help, sucking the poison out of the wound. At the hospital, Tom stayed overnight, calling his parents and saying that he was staying with friends. The next morning, he is still there. He asks Sal to write to him, which is strange since their acquaintance had begun so threateningly. Sal agrees, though she has to ask him his name, since he had never introduced himself. This is a friendship that grew out of an intense moment. Tom’s threat is never explained, nor what his purpose was. He reveals himself to be a nice kid after all, helping to save Gram’s life.
