When Pahom met the Bashkirs, he informed them that he was there to acquire some land. His objective made the Bashkirs happy, and they welcomed him warmly. They ushered him into the best tent and had some mutton prepared for him. Pahom, in return, shared out the tea and offered them presents he had brought. The hosts were impressed and offered to do all they could for their visitor who brought them gifts, in line with their customs.

Pahom stated that he was there to acquire land because where he was coming from the land was exhausted. The Bashkirs agreed to offer him land, and all he had to do was point it out with his hand. However, some of the Bashkirs were hesitant because their chief was not present. While they continued their deliberations, the chief arrived. Pahom was informed of his arrival, and he offered him “the best dressing gown and five pounds of tea.”
