The human skull is generally composed of 22 bones. These include bones that form the head and the face. The number of bones is greater when a person is born and there is more movement possible so that the growing brain can be properly accommodated. As a person grows older, many of the the bones fuse to form a single larger bones, this leads to 22 bones that can be separated.
Apart from the joints between the teeth, and that between the mandible and cranium all the bones that form the skull are connected by a joint formation known as suture. These are joined together by Sharpney's fibers. At the sutures, only a very small amount of movement is allowed. The degree of movement decreases with age and many of the bones have been found to have fused together in the elderly.
