Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief begins at Percy's boarding school, Yancy Academy, a private school for troubled kids in upstate New York. After Percy leaves school, however, he goes to his mother's apartment (an apartment she shares with Percy's stepfather, Gabe) in the city. In an attempt to keep the peace between Percy and Gabe, Sally Jackson, Percy's mom, takes him to Montauk, a popular beach vacation spot in New York state (and a place of important sentimental significance to them). Once Percy is forced to reveal the strange things that have recently happened to him, his mom realizes that his life is in danger and she drives him to Camp Half-Blood, a "summer camp" on Long Island, also in New York. Thus, all of the initial settings of the novel are in the state of New York.
