Tokyo, Japan, has the largest metropolitan area in the world.  The area includes over five thousand square miles.  The population of the metro area is almost forty million people.

Jakarta, Indonesia, is the second largest metropolitan area in the world.  The population is just over thirty million people.  Delhi, India, is the third largest metropolitan area in the world.  The population of the metro area is approximately twenty-five million people.

Asian cities and metropolitan areas are structured differently than those in many other regions.  High rise apartment complexes and condominiums are characteristic of large Asian cities.  These types of buildings allow for more people to live per square mile.
