How does soda affect your teeth?

Soda can affect teeth in the following ways:

1. Citric acid is the main acid present in sodas. Citric acid is able to bind to the calcium in teeth. This results in a loss of calcium which weakens teeth and makes them more susceptible to decay.

2. Sodas have very low pH's. Low pH favors the growth of some bacteria. Bacteria produce more acid and cause cavities.

3. Sodas have a very high sugar content. Bacteria consume sugar in order to survive and reporduce. The more sugar that is available, the better bacteria are able to grow. More bacteria leads to more acid production and cavities.

Although diet sodas do not contain sugar, they still cause significant dental errosion and cavities due to their high acid content. The high acid content in diet sodas supports the growth of bacteria, which leads to more cavities.
