What does Bud say to his mother's picture?

In Chapter Nineteen of Bud, Not Buddy, Bud discovers that Herman E. Calloway is his grandfather by showing the grumpy man the picture of his mother that Bud carries around in his suitcase. Calloway is devastated by this news, having never known what happened to his runaway daughter. The abruptness of the news of her death sends him sobbing into the next room. Bud, on the other hand, is satisfied to finally know the truth.

At the end of this chapter, Bud receives a new picture of his mother from Miss Thomas, one in which she has a "soft smile." Bud practices his saxophone and stares at this photo, smiling back at his mother. Bud then says to the picture, "Here we go again, Momma, only this time I can't wait!" Bud resumes happily playing his instrument and considers how good he has it now.
