"The Most Dangerous Game" is a short story which puts a new spin on the big-game hunting genre. In the story, an accomplished hunter named Sanger Rainsford is ship-wrecked while traveling to Rio de Janeiro to hunt jaguars. He ends up on Ship-Trap Island and meets its two inhabitants: a big-game hunter named General Zaroff and his deaf-mute servant, Ivan.
Zaroff initially seems friendly, and he and Rainsford discuss their hunting exploits. However, Zaroff complains that he has become so adept at big-game hunting that it no longer brings him enjoyment; in short, he is bored. Thus, he moved to Ship-Trap Island so he could hunt the most dangerous game: man. He captures shipwrecked sailors and hunts them for sport. He wants a challenge, so he tells them that he will set them free if they can survive for three days; so far, none have eluded him. Rainsford is Zaroff's next victim.
Zaroff gives Rainsford a short head-start, and the man spends three days eluding his hunter. In the end, Rainsford turns the tables on Zaroff and kills him; thus, the hunted became the hunter.
