Earth is divided into 3 separate layers: the crust, mantle, and the core. We live on the crust, which is the outermost covering of our planet. The ocean floor and continents are all part of the crust. This outermost layer has a thickness of 5-50 km and is divided into 2 parts: continental crust and oceanic crust, corresponding to the continents and oceans, respectively. The oceanic crust is not as thick as the continental crust. The crust is divided into a number of fragments known as the tectonic plates. The crust is the thinnest layer of the Earth and is mostly made up of basalt and granite.
Underneath the crust is the mantle, which is the middle layer of our Earth. The innermost part of the Earth is known as the core.
