Romeo, wounded by rejection from his love interest Rosaline, is invited by his friends to infiltrate a masked ball at the residence of the Capulets, the chief rival to Romeo's family, the Montagues. Romeo takes up with his friends Mercutio and several others either related to or loyal to the Montagues to travel to the ball being thrown by Juliet's family, the Capulets.
With their party masks as cover the Montague contingent escapes detention by the Capulets for much of the evening as they dance and carouse with unsuspecting Montagues and their guests. However Tybalt, a pugnacious young partisan of the Capulet clan, spies Romeo as Romeo approaches the beautiful young daughter of the Capulet clan, the 13-year-old Juliet. Tybalt is outraged that Romeo has encroached upon the Capulet's celebration:
"This, by his voice, should be a Montague.—
(to his PAGE) Fetch me my rapier, boy.—What, dares the slave
Come hither, covered with an antic face,
To fleer and scorn at our solemnity?
Now, by the stock and honor of my kin,
To strike him dead I hold it not a sin."
Romeo departs the ball after his first meeting with Juliet, only to meet her once again the same night in the famous balcony scene (located on the Capulet estate), as the young lovers profess their devotion to one another.
